 Portsmouth City Council's Facebook visits
« Thread Started on Sept 10, 2009, 2:07pm »

Hi all
I read a very interesting article on Management Today regarding Facebook breaks in companies. Apparently some employers are thinking about allowing five minutes in the morning and five minutes in the afternoon - in order for staff to get their fix and not play around on it during the rest of the day.
I think it could work...
I've noticed that whenever I go on my Facebook, I loose track of time and easily 15 minutes leap by... ::)

Apparently Portsmouth City Council isn't happy about this at all because they discovered that their staff were logging on to Facebook up to 270,000 times per month.
Wow!

What do you think about Facebook and other social media in the workplace?

Hey Jessica,
Can you imagine how much money the council are losing when their employees log into facebook instead of working? 10 minutes every day mounts up and actually costs the council money. In ways I would recommend blocking these sites so they are not available on work computers. I think that is the only way it can be controlled... Or do you think setting breaks each day could really work?

Though could you argue that if these sites are blocked that employees will take breaks elsewhere? A quick chat when they make a cup of tea etc? I really don't know what approach is best to managing the situation!

PEople should rather have breaks away from their desks. Nothing important really happens on Facebook apart from people changing their status now and then and people adding photos of a weekend party - however this is fun to see lol.
I don't know, I'm really glad I'm not someone's boss.
